An inversion can be a short-term or a long-term situation. The physical symptoms of inversions can include feeling upside down, a heart attack, or a stroke. Research suggests that as many as half of all people have experienced a moment of acute inversion (inverting moments) at some point in their lives. The inversion can be acute if a person has experienced it only one time in their lives, or it can be chronic if they experience a moment of inversion every day. Several different inversions can occur. When a person is on a bike or in a car, for example, a situation can arise in which the seat in front of the driver becomes behind the driver, and vice versa. Another inversion, known as walking backward, occurs when someone walks or runs back to a place from which they were walking or running forward. The symptom of walking backward is sometimes called a backward stagger. Other inversions include walking backwards in a forward direction, walking in the opposite direction of traffic, or driving backwards. When you have a walking backward situation, your body first experiences a position of “forward walking”—that is, you walk forward. Then, the moment the back of your body comes into contact with the ground, a temporary inversion occurs. Your body then moves backwards to the ground. You can feel this backward inversion if you suddenly have to get to the front of your body, or you can hear a crack in your back because you are falling. Because inversions occur when a person’s feet first encounter the ground, walking backward is a common inversion among people who play sports or engage in physical activity. Walking backward can be considered to be an inversion if your body is moving forward and suddenly comes into contact with the ground or a surface. A common symptom of walking backward is a sensation in the back of the head and neck, causing one to believe that their head is floating in the air. The sensation can also be felt throughout the body. In an extreme case, walking backward can lead to a panic attack or cause a
